I picked up my 99 from one of my dealers that got it in on trade several years
ago for 2k. It was a very nice car until my wife got ahold of it. I will keep
my eyes open for one of those also but I would look for a 99 and up, 00 and up
has the facelift

AFAIK When you switch to max you are stopping all current flowing to the valve.
If the heat stops after you switch to any setting other than max, it sounds
like the coil might be shorted out. I would check the voltage across the leads
going to the valve while someone moves the control back and
