The shifter is loose and the reverse lockout is gone. The mechanic doesn’t
want to take the shifter apart because it will make the car unmovable unless
you push it. I’d like to get a shifter and rebuild it and then switch them.
The problem is now finding a shifter.

I don't remember the MGC being too bad - it was tighter at the firewall,
byt I don't have any bad memories from working on them. I was working at a
"foreign car garage" putting myself through college in the late 60's, early
'70's, and saw a lot of MGs, Triumphs, Jags, VWs, Fiats, Simcas, and the

I very much doubt that as the little 4 banger has
plenty of room around it. I don't know about how
that would work with an MGC with the bigger 6
cylinder it has. I have never looked under the
hood of one of those though I did get a chance to
drive one once a long time ago. Quite a nice

headlight bulb. I tried to do it and gave up, it was so convoluted.

In my 1973 280 the reverse light was out. Turns out the fix involved
replacing the neutral safety switch, which required jacking up the
transmission. Major job!

Friend just told me he had to remove the whole front bumper cover
assembly and loosen a motor mount and jack up the engine in order to
change a headlight bulb in a 2006 VW Passat.

How worn-out? There are replaceable bushings inside the shifter, IIRC.

I did not try to fix the 4-speed shifter, the local mbz mechanic fixed one of
the rod ends and thinks it’s OK. I would like to find a 4 speed shifter to
replace the worn out one in the car. Does anyone know where I can find one?
