I work off of mileage as well, every 5k in my case, which I wasn’t able to hit
on Mrs. Dan’s car after two years, so I changed it.
I just barely hit that interval annually on the ML500, so a year or mileage
works for it either way.

A 1 year limit is usually advised by the manufacturer. This is, at least in
theory, based on the acid buildup in the oil. IIRC acid buildup is controlled
by TBN (total base number) in the oil. You could get oil analysis to check and
see if TBN has fallen to the point that engine damage could occ
If it was a time limit, 6 months seems short. 1 year maybe?
