I don't have a handle on how big those cars are. Are they about the same size as a 123? I feel like the 1.9l VW TDI is an excellent modern diesel to transplant. Its smaller, lighter, and with minor mods more powerful than a stock 617 turbo. They also start a heck of a lot better when cold...

Price doesn't seem crazy.  I wonder how it is geared for highway cruising.  Slap a heavy hitch on it, tow your car trailer and toys.  Rearrange for a bunk and a cook top and little fridge or put that stuff in the existing build, put a heat/AC unit on it, and you'd be good to go.
