Does anyone know the "specified torque" for the bolts that hold the
front brake disc to the hub on a 83 240D? (trying to get this done
over the weekend)

I have the engine from my 83 240D in my basement. I replaced it with
another engine. I would like to remove the cylinder head without
bending or breaking the cam chain. How do I do this? I have the proper
MBZ tool for removing the head bolts.
The engine has 0 compression in Cyl. #1. On

Has anyone ever replaced a Ignition Lock Housing (link below) on a 123
Chassis (240D) car? How did you do it? or, what page of what manual
tells how it is done.

Hello everyone,
This started with my "Key won't turn" message from a week ago. I did
manage to get the lock cylinder out of my 83 240D and I replaced it
with a new one from the dealer. It worked fine for one day. Now it
has locked up again, which makes me think that the steering wheel lock
Thank you Allan, Mitch, Brian, and Tom for your information and
suggestions about key lock removal. I did think about the keyless car
problem so I may take a day or two and talk to Rusty about the parts.
I have another car so I am not stranded. I may also remove the
battery.

Hello Everyone,
My 1983 240D is sitting in front of my house unable to move because
the (ignition) key will no longer turn. The last time I started it I
had to giggle the steering wheel and the key to find the perfect spot
in which everything lined up and I could start thr car. I
Hello Everyone,
My trusty 83 240D is making crackling knocking noises when I first
start it up in the morning or when it has had a chance to cool off for
a while. The sound is like the "spark-knock" sound that a gasoline
engine can make. When the engine warms up the sound goes away.

Thank you all for your replies to my ATF question. I'm glad to know
that there are several solutions. I think I will try and find some
Mobil 1 ATF first.

Hello Everyone.
I have had my 83 240D for 6 years and the battery I bought when I
got the car is starting to fade. What should I get? Parts store says
they have a "240D' battery in stock 850 Cold Cranking Amp. is that
enough? (Whatever battery I get must fit in the tray.)

Thank you Marshall.
I will warm it up before I check it. Will removing the glow plugs while they
are hot damage the threads?

I'll check again.

I managed to track down a compression tester for the 240D engine. This tester
goes through the glow plug opening. There is a tire type air valve in the
opening of the tester. This seems to keep any pressure from getting through to
the gage, does anyone know why it is there? What pressure
In my 83 240D I found that Marvel Mystery oil in the fuel tank helped the
injector problems(engine rough and missing). I put a pint into less than a
full tank the last time I added it. Will TOO MUCH Marvel make the injector
problem worse?

As I recall that is the same size I will need to turn the crankshaft to check
thr cam chain, right?

Marshall,
Great to hear from you. You first replied to my messages before I bought this
car. I found the MBZ list when I was looking for a MB Diesel. I have now had
this car for almost 5 years and almost 80K miles. I am now at a point where the
car needs much attention before it continues on with

How much would a matched set of new or rebuilt injecters cost?

Here are some answers:

It seems to run on all 4 cylinders at driving speed. Up until the time it
started running on 3 cylinders it was an intermittent problem.

No, car has 235K.

Gradually, the "Italian Tune-up" seemed to clear it up at first. It gradually
got worse and worse.

Holed Piston!!? How could that happen?
How do I do a compression test on this engine?
I'm not sure it will idle but I guess the one that doesn't make it stop is the
one.
Thank you for your help.
John Ingram
My 83 240D (235K) after idling poorly for a month is now running on 3 cylinders.
Before an "Italian Tune-up" would help the problem has continued and was
intermittent until now.
Valves are adjusted, filters 3 months old, primer pump replaced, fuel additives
used. I suspect the fuel injectors or (
