Most New York City dwellers do not have a garage, basement, or workshop. I grew up in Brooklyn, and my dad was a machinist. I learned from him, my Grandpa, and my uncle. Grandpa owned a six-family house, Dad had a workshop in Grandpa's cellar. I blunder around but manage some things. I've taught my millennial kids a bit, and bought them some basic tools.
On topic: Both of my sons have done some Benz wrenching on a 240D, and one will be doing DIY maintenance on a GLK. And my daughter wrenched some hard-to-reach glow plugs into my diesel Suburban 'cuz she was petite enough to climb right into the engine compartment!
