My mechanic said that the most likely reason for failure of the aux.
cooling fan in our 1985 300CD is a blown fuse. The fan blade spins
freely so the motor isn't seized. He says the fuse is located
separate from the fuse box but didn't tell me where. Can someone
help, or is he incorrect?
Isn't there a thermal switch somewhere too that turns it on/off? I
don't know where the fuse would be but seems like if you follow the
power wire you should find it.

There are LOTS of reasons for the aux fan not running besides a bad
fuse. Open windings occasionally occur. Brushes DO wear out. The fan
should only be on when refrigerant high side temperatures exceed about
65 deg C (that occurs when refrigerant pressure gets above about 275
psi) so it cycles
