I went through our local pick & pull recently and came across a W140
S320 which had a Becker head unit someone had tried to remove - looked
like that used a crowbar - it looks like all that kind of stereo
equipment of any value was destroyed trying to remove it. The trunk

Many of these aftermarket units have adjustable
front-panel color schemes. Or is blue now just 'too
cool' to avoid? I hate blue lights. Anywhere.
It's the antithesis of night-vision-friendly, and
is impossible to focus on.

I can assure you I'll never be happy with the aesthetics of this radio,
however, life is full of compromises, and this is one I'm willing to make to
gain the more modern features.
I'm not getting rid of the Becker, I can tell you that

When you say it's a "head unit" - is that in the sense the w124s are
head units with the tuner and amp in the trunk? Just curious -- my OEM
head unit is starting to do funny things (funny as in strange, not haha)
;-) but I doubt its a head unit in the purest sense?

No, but neither will any other aftermarket head units that I know of.
I never use the CD changer as it is, and the one in my R129 doesn't work anyway.

I hate aftermarket units in MBs, too, but after having one for a short time
when I got the car I was spoiled with the iPod and phone integration. I can
deal with the aesthetics, but I wouldn't go with anything that didn't sound as
good or better than the stock Becker.
