My recently deceased '82 240D "ran fine" on B99, but "underperformed" in the mpg category (though I imagine part of that was probably my average speed over 70mph); I noticed no such problem w/ my '03 TDI (same mpg, more or less, with B99 or B0). It was suggested to me by more than one party (incl. here on this list, I believe) that this _might_ be alleviated by advancing the timing a little; this didn't need to be done, it was claimed, on the TDI 'cause the electronic timing control was automatically doing it dynamically.
