Pads are fine as far as material remaining. So, does this sound like

Classic symptoms of a master cylinder problem. The piston can't
hold the pressure.
I was successful opening one up and just cleaning and

Isn't this the classic symptom of a bad master cylinder?

Master cylinder is leaking internally, time to replace it.
Just did this job on my E300; I bought some fish tank air tubing at Wallyworld
to help bleed. Drained and removed reservoir first, then disconnected all the
lines at the MC. Replaced the MC and put everything back together, filled the

Like Mitch said, sounds like a master cylinder.
On a car that old, you should replace the four rubber hoses. You'll be
amazing by the improvement in pedal feel, and you reduce you chances of be

Yup. Sounds like the cups (seals) in your master cylinder are worn or bad.
One other thing to check before you replace it:
Make sure the clevis is allowing the piston to return all the way to the end of
the bore.
You can do this by checking that the pedal comes all the way up and that there
is
Leaky piston seals in master cylinder = sinking pedal, no loss of fluid.
Leaking anything else = sinking pedal and loss of fluid.

My recently acquired 83 300D had weak brakes when I bought it. The pedal was
soft. While bleeding the system I found the front calipers were barely working.
Rebuilt the calipers and now the breaks are still soft. Bled with a pressure
system and I think I have all the air out. The pedal will pu

This may save me some time figuring out which caliper to rebuild.

I can never remember. But it's easy to follow the front
