quality of iPhones or holset turbos or millions of other high quality items

If you have them and prefer the look, why not? I doubt you are going to
make all that much difference to the handling of the car.

I inherited it from my good friend and neighbor Jon who passed away in May 2017
of prostate cancer.
It is dark red with palomino mb Tex and is in excellent condition with 146K

There are decent chinese 15" Bundt wheels on ebay now. I may take the
plunge.

I would expect steelies would be easy to get, the aluminum ones not so much as
IIRC they were only on '83 240Ds.
Dimitri had a set of both steelies and aluminum steelies with the '78 240D...

I could trade them for steelies. IIRC bundt lug bolts are longer than
steelies.

Usually narrower wheels cause more squirm in
the tires especially if you use a little
wider tire then normal, 195's being the norm.
I've found a VAST improvement in handling on
my TD using 7.5x15 wheels and 215-60's.

As you all know, I think they are ugly. I’m considering removing them from my
85 300D and replacing with aluminum steelies with hubcaps. The aluminum
steelies are a bit narrower. Does this affect the performance of the car in any
way?
