Then a man in, I kid you not, a red Satin smoking jacket comes out and
waves.
Hmmm. Red Satin smoking jacket. Was he smoking a pipe? Sounds like Hugh
Hefner.

It troubled me that the guy in satin stiffed the tow truck driver. All I
can think of is that the poem gives Mercedes owners a bad rep as
cheapskates.
Should we ask NPR for rebuttal time? The world should know of the many
generous souls in our online community of tristar aficionados.

Driving down Ward Parkway (posh), there was a pristine red (of course)
gullwing, with both doors open and NOBODY around parked in this fellow's
driveway. I was flabbergasted. Just sitting there on display forthe cars
driving by? Circled back and blocked a lane of traffic to admire it. Had
pictures?

He'd gone to get groceries in it and managed to spill a
gallon of milk. He'd hosed it out and was letting it dry?

I bought my SD from two doctors that live off Ward Parkway...if you were to see
a Gullwing in someone's driveway in Kansas City, this would be the place.

Well, you know where the guy lives... knock on his door sometime.
His driveway gate was open and I really should have pulled in and knocked on
the door. The SD would have identified me as a friendly (although not quite
in the same class) and maybe I could have gotten a ride. That would have been
sweet.

I was thinking about that. Hopefully some woman would have come out and said,

I would have been more inclined to stop had I not had a 7, 5 and 4 year old in
tow.

I was in our local benz club here about 15 years ago, when I was thinking
about getting a benz at that time. one of the guys had a gullwing. He
traded a mint SL for the gullwing, which was at the time, pulled out of a
pond here. Cool car, probably the first, or one of the first real exotic
cars

Depends on your definition of exotic. Bugatti made some cars
(mit supercharger) that were very exotic in their day, and
fully depreciated long before 1955. Perhaps the 'coachwork
and chassis' days
Bugs were pretty, but nothing state of the art. Bentley in the day was much
more exotic, even though Ettore called them buses, or trucks. The bently
had aluminum pistons, OHV, 4 valves per cylinder. The gullwing was one of
the first, if not the first road cars to have an injected engine. The
The dealer in OKC has mint restored silver gullwing on the show room
floor from time to time. The price is a cool $1,000,000.

Like so many similar cars, the prices have been all over the place over the
past 15 years. Nice thing about the old exotics you just need an english
wheel and some hammers to fix them. Imagine restoring a SLR in 40 years?
:-) You'll have to go to Boeing or some other place with a hug autoclave

There's a completely restored Gullwing on the showroom floor in the
OKC stealership - they're asking a cool $1,000,000.00 for it, but are
open to offers.

I did a mechanical restoration on a Roadster 3 years ago that sold for
$125,000.00 USD. Seems like a real bargain now.
Rudy did all the repairs on a buddy's '57 Roadster after it bounced off a
guard rail and then got hit by a Gullwing sliding backwards, totally out of
control. No one got hurt
My immediate reaction upon seeing that was that:
