On my '02 ML 320 the gas cap locks, but does not unlock, whether done from the
remote or the switch on the console. Is there a relay that is likely faulty?

Unfortunately, WD-40 (Water Dispersant attemp #40) does not lubricate,
but gums up after a while.

Run some temporary wires to be sure, or test for zero ohms for the wire run.
If the wires run through a door hinge accordion joint, that would be your prime
suspect for a breaking point.
