I’m sure it is probably epoxy of some sort. I was using “Bakelite” as something
descriptive.
The POR-15 people make a two-part epoxy to restore steering wheels. I’ve got
some of it on the shelf, but I’ve never used it.

Has anyone , over the years, ever made a set of master molds and made
replacements that are recast on the original steel frame bits that make the
original wheel?
It seems that there would be a solid market, since the cracked and often

I don't believe it's Bakelite. That is fairly brittle stuff, and not very
strong.
Honestly it looks more like some sort of epoxy to me.

I have one on a shelf in my garage. It needs some crack repair though.

The wheels are like a rhetorical question. It’s a given they are incorrect and
icky.

The 115 has the black plastic wheel with the chrome center ring and small
center horn pad. I’m not sure how I feel about them, I prefer the 74 and up

Agreed. The off-white Bakelite steering wheel that was on the W110/111/112
models was a thing of beauty. I don’t recall the same on the W114/115, but
there could very well have been the same on early models, I guess? I am pretty
sure my 250C had a Bakelite wheel (1970) but it was black.
Hmmm.
But there has always been something about the later steering wheel with the
W115 dash that hasn’t sat well with me.

That said, it is a nice looking car. I think $8k, may $8.5k would be more in
line, but I haven’t followed prices on these of late and the low miles make it
a true Dean candidate.
