The video of the ISUCFVMB dinosaur show is sweeping the interwebs.

The Iowa State Cyclone Football Varsity Marching Band is one of the best in the country. That fact that is is one of the best in the country over a lot of years was recognized last year when the ISUCFVMB and the Iowa State Cyclone Football Alumni Marching Band receive the Sudler Trophy, awarded to the band that has been top notch for decades.

The ISUCFVMB began its modern tradition of excellence in 1972, when Jimmy Howard Reynolds was appointed as Band Director. JHR turned the traditions on end. The prior band was military, limited to 97 and boring. JHR threw out the uniforms most of the cadences, the traditions and put the band in nylon jackets, with every member providing their own black pants and black shoes because there was no budget. In in73, JHR hired Joseph Christensen as the assistant Director of Bands, and Director of the ISU Marching Band. Although Mr. C. had primary responsibility for the marching band, JHR was heavily involved each fall. By 1974, the numbers had swollen to about 350, and needed 7 busses to travel. In 1975, the band took a bicentennial themed patriotic show to Oklahoma, and received a roaring standing ovation from the Okies, who appreciated the show immensely.

In 1978, the Band took on cleaning the football stadium to raise money for uniforms. Before the trip to Kansas City to play halftime for the Chiefs, JHR secured permission from the Athletic Director, Lou McCoullogh, for band members, grungy from cleaning the stadium, to take showers and change in the locker rooms before boarding the busses to go to KC. The band went in the locker rooms, and the head coach, Earle Bruce, who fancied himself to be Bear Bryant, came in and told us we could not take showers because this was the VARSITY locker room. There were over 150 of us, and I tried to instigate the crowd to throw Bruce out and take our showers. However, Tim Jensen, who was the other Bass Drum player shouted "ITS OK, WE'RE THE VARSITY BAND!" In the end, we left and took our various bacteria, puke and viruses picked up in the stadium and its restrooms on to the bus for the long ride to KC. But ever after the band has been unofficially or officially known as the Iowa State University VARSITY Marching Band!
