Back in 1995 or so, I bought the 81 240D, and jumped 2 decades in a
single leap. Got central locking, a sunroof and that stupid
auuutomatic transmission that MBNA dictated we all wanted. I
completely skipped the 108s, the 114s and the 115s. Skipped a whole
generation of MBs. Then I bought a series of cars and at one time we
had 80, 81, 83, 84, 85, 86 and 87 123s and 126s

Now I am down to only 2 123s and only one 126. (and several
124s) Plus the 2 110s still in the family

Now I have jumped into another decade. With help from Herr
Listmeister, I jumped to a 94 E 320.

I'm really impressed driving the E320. I have major concerns that
there is nothing much I can work on, but it is a hotrod, compared to
the older 3 liter M103 engine and my Dissels. I think it will take
off faster than the 380SL. As an old Dieselhead, even a 300SDL seems
fast and quick, but the performance of the new engine, M104, is impressive.

I thought the old M102 230E (Euro) was a screamer, but now this
E320 is my definition of a screamer. It reminds me of driving my old
67 Chevelle SS396. I think it is at least as fast and as quick as
the chevelle was at 12 mpg. I couldn't afford to feed the chevelle
even on $0.35 gas back then. I sold it and bought my first MB, the
1962 190Dc. Talk about a change! But I loved the 35 mpg. Back
then, a friend of mine had a meteor with the ford 170 engine. It is
hard to believe the displacement of the M104 is nearly the same as
the anemic ford 170, with probably 3 times the HP. What a difference
the technology makes.

I knew the v-8 124s are bonafide hotrods, but the 320 surprised
me. truly in sheep's clothing. But then i think the 124 Diesels are
wolves in sheep's clothing compared to the general impression of
Diesels, and especially compared to 123 240D automatics. I am not a
fan of V engines. I like 4, 5, or 6 cyl inline. Much easier and
cheaper to maintain/rebuild. I have never drooled over the v-8 124s.

Except for when I have to smell the stink of gasoline, I am loosing
my aversion to gassers! Ah! for the sweet smell if
Diesel! Getting ripped so royally for Diesel fuel has a large part
to do with it.

If anyone has a spare 8 hole 124 wheel, I need a spare!
