Subject: [MBZ] Another 6.9 headache!!

Hi, everyone!
Anyone know a trick to removing the water pump on our most wonderful
treasure of a car? Another fun challenge of our 77 450SEL 6.9---- There
has just got to be a trick! Surely they didn't build the rest of the car
around the water pump?!!! Looks like we gotta pull the radiator AND the
harmonic balancer, wooooe is me. Thanks for any pointers, Chris N John

Hi Christy,

Mine is a 79 Euro model but I believe they were all the same.

Undo the four nuts holding the fan by rotating the fan in 45 degree
increments so you'd be working on the 12 o'clock nut only. when all four
nuts are off, slide the fan upward along with the radiator shroud, at this
point you have a straight shot at the pump but be very careful with bolts as
they are known to shear leaving an almost inaccessible shank in the
vulnerable aluminum block.
Forgive me if I've overlooked any steps along the way for it has been close
to ten years since I did it on mine.

I hope this will be of help,

Omar.
