(From another list:)
Most Canadians think of themselves living in a democracy like USians, which is wrong (in both cases). In reality Canada, like the US is a democratic republic. The difference being that Canada evolved gradually into a democratic republic and US was designed to be a democratic republic.
On the face of it, the US, being carefully engineered by the founders to protect its citizens from tyranny and the abuse of government, should be less tyrranical than Canada which evolved from a once despotic monarchy, but the opposite is actually true. I have lived in the US and in Canada, and have often wondered why this should be so. The conclusion I came to is not very original, but may fit. I think that just like people, governments live up to their expectations. The USian expects government to be abusive and corrupt, and that is what they have. The Canadian expects their government to provide order and stability without corruption, and that is pretty much what they have. That is not to say that there is no corruption or abuse by government and politicians in Canada, but when it occurs there is no tolerance for it. On the other hand, the USian expects their politicians to be corrupt and their many alphabetic agencies to be abusive, they are quick to forgive overly zealous enforcement or politicians caught with their hands in the cookie jar....snip
