the other thing is that everyone always focuses on the mad random act of
violence, which is exactly the wrong place to be focusing.

A little perspective:
There are about 30K gun deaths annually in the US, roughly the same as the
number of automobile deaths. But about 20K of these gun deaths are
suicides. So roughly 10K of the annual gun deaths are accidents or
unjustified homicides.
