I think you can put some sort of Unix flavor on the stick and boot from
it, then use the file utility to just "Copy C -> D" or whatever, which
should move everything over and make an image of C at whatever time you
do it. You could try Ubuntu, which is a fully-featured OS and not
wildly differ
My computer guy told me a while back that he would make me a usb stick
with the necessary files on to permit me to boot the computer and then
to use it to copy the whole hard drive onto a portable drive so that it
would be available as a backup to restore the computer in the event of
trouble.
