They probably have a API that is linked to functions in a a particular version or versions of Word. Quite common for custom applications. They don’t support legacy applications for any number of reasons, the one I would be most concerned about being security. Vendors stop supporting application

I am a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to my office computer. My needs are fairly minimal - word processing , spreadsheet, accounting, etc. Nothing all that elaborate. I am still using Windows 7 but they are doing their best to push me to 10. We have 10 at home so I have some familiarity with
