Supposed to get down close to freezing here nightly through Sunday.
Rear bearing on the pool pump motor is failing. Lousy timing, I’ll just have to
turn it off until MondayI guess.

DMV will go from 45 deg. at dawn to 5 at sunset. All time record for Dec

We had that yesterday. Near 40 yesterday morning, -5 overnight.

Well in Mass the roads are beyond repair. Might as well be in the Ukraine after
a Russian missile strike. A patch here and there will not fix these roads. It
really makes me angry. I pay 30K per years in real estate taxes in this state.

I saw 2 guys out filling potholes yesterday. The day before it rains and goes
into a cold snap. They didn't even have a compactor. I'm betting that all those
patches will be back out by Saturday...

No potholes yet as it hasn’t thawed. Wait for about 2 months and then they’ll
be around, for sure. They just get them filled before winter, that’s the
difference.

there are no
potholes here. Red states obviously take pride in infrastructure unlike
Massachusetts where the potholes will rattle your car to bits.

Yup.
I use mine often when I'm teaching. My "office" is our enclosed porch which we
don't heat. We have hydronic heat and while there are radiators out there
they're shut off. I don't want to heat it all the time and don't want them full
of water that freezes so I just keep them empty.
The days
They're definitely more fussy than a pressure lamp, that's for sure.
But they're quiet and don't need all that pumping.

I was already all Volkswagen by that point. I suspect the VE engine in my old
Jetta would have tolerated some gasoline. I was considering kerosene as an
additive but the Power Service was handy.
Angie's Golf is a pump duse engine which wants no gasoline. My current (2015)

I've got one Aladdin that will maybe match a 40w bulb for a little while.
Running them on high always gets me a carboned mantle.
If I really want to read I've got a kerosene Coleman lamp (model 152) ready to
go. They're a little annoying to live with in a house that doesn't have a real
porch. Y

Your old MB diesels were rated for up to 25% gasoline in the fuel, for just
such an occasion.

Having an Aladdin or two around is pretty handy. You can read without
eyestrain with one of those, for example. IIRC it's about like a 60W bulb.
I have two. One to use, and a backup in case the primary fails. (Mantle
break, refill time, etc.) Not the stupidest thing in the world to have a spa
Several years ago, maybe 2016, we had a really cold snap in December or January
and apparently they hadn't been treating the diesel as well as they should.
Everybody I know was having trouble with gelled fuel. Fortunately I had a half
gallon of power service in the grooming machine so I snagged
We're having really weird weather today. Right now it's 40+F headed for a
daytime high of 50 and raining. Tonight it's supposed to get to a low of 9F.
I've got a pot roast in the slow cooker, in a little bit I'll go start the
woodstove. I've got about a 4 day supply of wood in the house. I like
I had a gelling incident once. Not Fun.
Fuel purchased in Tacoma, and driven east
of the mountains.

Diesel is winterized at the distributor starting in about October I think.
I don't know how cold it's good for but I've never had gelling with
recently-purchased fuel at similar temps.
Cars aren't affected by wind chill. Real ambient temp is what matters.

We are having sudden unprecedented cold here. It’s currently 1 and will be
about 2-3 all night till tomorrow. It’s -20 with windchill. Wife took the truck
to town a little while ago but it’s so cold I’m wondering if the diesels should
have received does diesel treatment, or if there is a danger
