Visited the dealership to discuss my cold start problem - to re-state the
problem - when the engines cold, it starts instantly but will not rev - when
I try to rev I get smoke from the exhaust and it acts like it;s on 3
cylinders. It usually clears up with-in 100 yards - I put the pedal all the
way down and it gradually gains speed - while smoking - and then after the
100 yards it screams - running faster than at any other time.

The service technician asked about all the usual stuff that you guys
suggested I try - filters, leaks, etc - then he said he's seen a weak FI
leak fuel when sitting and leaving a pool of fuel in the cylinder. Then,
when the engine is started it is hard to burn before finally reaching a
temperature where it ignites and then it runs very fast. Sounds a lot like
mine.

Sounds more to me like two or more glow plugs, or the circuit that supports
them. They could measure good and still be so carboned in that they don't
fire the fuel mixture.
If so, you may have to remove the glow plugs to get them properly cleaned,
assuming you can get the glow plugs out! The factory reaming tool is probably
needed.

When you shut a diesel off, the residual fuel pressure should be about
10PSI, or less, as held by the backpressure valve on the return line from the
IP.
If an injector is leaking, it would have to be leaking pretty bad to leak at
10PSI. Also, the engine would have to stop with that cylinder's IP plunger
in the fill position every time. That is 6 to 1 odds that the engine will
stop on the leaking injector.

You could manually bleed off the IP pressure after your last run of the day,
to prove/ disprove your mechanic's theory. Just crack the banjo nut on the
side of the fuel filter enough to relieve the pressure. Then if it smokes
the next morning, it is not a leaky injector, more likely two or more
ineffective glow plugs.

Just one man's opinion,
