Neat article. I bought a Bosch front loader back in 2000 and never had any
problems. I cleaned the detergent dispenser once and a while.

I will say it's been about a week since I installed my little CPU fan
arrangement and the washer has been smelling just fine.
I forgot about a load of laundry in it overnight, which almost guaranteed
skunkyness, and amazingly enough - none.

I think it's a cycle that can be used to freshen items that are dry clean

I had an associate at work that purchased one of the top loaders without an

She said that her clothes came out of it looking like they had been run over by

I have a Bosch front loader, and am pretty much happy with it.
Occasionally it won't spin due to unbalance conditions (when I put too

One of the reasons attributed to the skunky smell issue is the use of too much
detergent. Most manufacturers recommend no more than two tablespoons of HE
detergent per load unless you have really hard water.
My machine, despite being a low end one, will extend the wash cycle if there

I believe the real problem is stagnant water in the pump. In a top
loader, the amount of 'sump water' is quite small, but in the front
loaders the pump wasn't designed well on the first models, and the
amount of 'sump water' was higher in proportion to the wash volume.

If you had an older front loading washer, you may, from time to time,
experience issues with mold or a skunky smell in the drum. You can clean the

Our LG front loader doesn't really develop odor very often but when it
does, it has a tub clean cycle, run that with a cup of bleach and it
kills the odor for a good while.

That's one of the features the the manufacturers came out with to deal with the
problem. I believe most machines have this feature now. Mine does not, nor did
any others in GE's product line that year, from what I can determine.

No complaints. Water bill went WAY down (two teenage boys when we first got it)
and it handles much larger loads than the previous high capacity Maytag did.
Its been trouble free since day one, despite having been moved several times.
It continues to wash away with no complaints so far.
