a groany pump could be so if you have never changed the p/s filter and fluids in a long time . I did and all quiet.
this was on a 126 /300SE
I am not aware the service manual states p/s fluid replacement like the a/t changes which specifically mentions the Torque converter drain nut location access too.

Subject: [MBZ] Steering Box/Pump on 83' 300D

Ok, so just how connected are the power steering pump and gearbox on an 83'
300D?

To my knowledge the pump just "helps" make the gearbox easier to turn,
right?

Basically, my box seems to be at it's end. Last time I went in there and
just turned the input shaft of the gearbox by hand and watched the output
shaft for movement and I tightened it to it's outermost position, at which
point I removed about 6 inches or so of slop, but was still left with about
an inch or so. (I'm counting the measurement from points on the steering
wheel). It's been like this for quite some time.

Well, I've noticed a belt squealing a couple times recently, and yesterday I
started noticing that it seems like the pump is getting groany/harder to
turn at times. At first I thought I had a tire rubbing, but then I realized
it seems to be the pump complaining about being asked to move.

So I guess my question is, is there any chance one is causing a problem with the other? Or am I basically just reaching the end of life on both the box
and pump? Mileage isn't known, but going by the previous owner's
guesstimate's, everything but the engine is probably in the 300K or 400K
mile range...

Oh yeah, and I assume it's just going to be a major PITA to steer if and
when that pump dies, but I will be able to steer with enough muscle,
correct?

Spose it's time to start looking to see what prices are on used ones (if
there are any local). I would assume the pump is basically a couple hoses
and a couple bolts to replace so pretty easy, right?

How bad is the gearbox? Is it just a couple bolts on shafts or some such
thing? Or is there more to it or other alignment worries?

Thanks!
Levi
