You point your gun at the thermostat and tell it too open up, or else.
However you can also wedge something in it to open it up if you don't
have access to a firearm, like me, spose I can threaten it with a
cricket bat?
Another way is to use an old thermostat and cut a hole in it.
A lot of Merc engines need a thermostat in the housing to seal up the
housing, whereas some you can remove the thermostat altogether and then
run the engine.
