I realize the XJ is better offroad than a Volvo wagon, I just think the difference is a lot more subtle than it ought to be for a vehicle advertised for heavy duty offroad use. Considering that the Volvo wagon also has excellent handling and performance on the street, and is quiet and stabl

Perhaps you don't realize how low of gears, and how much travel a volvo wagon has. Some Volvo wagons came with a 4.3:1 rear axle and a 4.03:1 1st gear. They can also have 2-3 feet of suspension travel even with the stock front sway bar in place, and mine has a factory locking rear diff. The

Loose sloppy steering in an XJ is from poor maintenance. The fact that you compare something with low range in a transfercase to a volvo wagon for offroad prowess suggests you reaelly don't know what you're talking about, especially when you say that an XJ lacks suspension travel. I have two of th

I've driven a few of these- the steering feels really loose and sloppy, and the brakes dangerously poor. It's a nervous chore to keep the vehicle in the lane, and keep a huge following distance on the freeway. Offroad ability is only slightly better than my stock Volvo Turbo wagon with a facto

hi Curt! that might be the root of the problem; how many "cars" are equally competent on a desert washboard, in a foot of snow, or what's left of an old mining road? loud? if you judge an XJ by "car" standards, i guess you might find it noisy, but it still depends on what kid of conditio
