The scratch factor might depend upon whether cleaning the inside of a
windshield or the outside; i think they have plastic film on the inside,
which could scratch more easily I suppose.

It seems like Glass Wax and smells right. works on crusty glass too.

That works. When you’re done with it, put it in a freezer (heavy duty) ziploc

When we first got Angie's Golf it had little spots of roofing tar that had
dripped onto it, nothing I tried would remove it. The windshield was cracked
and after replacing it the Safelite
I wash all the windows in our cars with alcohol once a year or so, I use the
same denatured alcohol from the hardware store I use to preheat kerosene
lanterns. Dissolves a bunch of the schmoo thats hard to get off with Windex.

That, or what I like to use when I’ve got some really nasty glass, like with a
former smoker - rubbing compound. It’s messy, but you definitely cut through
everything on the glass. It will usually take off water spots as well.
