That means that the pressure of the cable in the drum is too great for the
little steel wheel.

Also if the mast has even the slightest bend in it that will put extra
pressure on the winding mechanism.

The antenna on my 300D was recently broken off by vandals or some sort
of accident.
I installed a new mast, but it does not retract fully. It leaves
anywhere from 2 - 4 in
We have the same problem on a 1985 300CD. Sometimes a spray of a diltued
soap solution (NOT WD-40) will help.
