if by "plain Cherokee" you mean the classic boxy XJ that they haven't
made for about 7 years, they were available for a few years with an
awful (Renault?) diesel back in the 80s.

have thought 30 + with a 602 variant, they got 22 with the diesel.
The 4.0L gasser gets 18, I think.
