There was a video on Mercedessource about the owners of a W123 chasing their
tail trying to find a leak. It ended up being in the area underneath the
cowl vents where a seam had rusted through. Hopefully, it's just a hole
behind the battery.

No. And I am in fact getting some water coming into the trunk on the
passenget side as well, pooling in the pocket in front of the taillight.

I bet you were using the dreaded green antifreeze!.
I didn't know from chopped liver in those days about that stuff. I did buy
