long dead o-ring. Take the bolt out, pry off the ancient, rock hard
o-ring, and replace.

That's exactly the purpose of that plug. It is a provision for a mechanical
tach. There is an o-ring in there that will leak after a while. Leaks from
this plug are commonplace as these cars are getting up in years.

The injectors seem to bolt to the back of whatever this is.
1977 240D. Just below the #1 (front) glowplug there is a round,
recessed area with what looks to be a 3/4" bolt head. This isn't part
of the engine (?) and I'm not sure what it is. The top of whatever
this is is perfectly horizontal.
I've found an accumulation of really dirty oil about 1/8" deep
