There is a guy who has a 93 TE I am interested in, has 190k on it
he says it has grey smoke when you get it up to about 2k. from
the description it seems like maybe it doesnt smoke until you rev
it up. What could the deal be with that, bad valve guide seals or
something?

Bad valve seals usually manifest by oil smoke at startup.
I'd guess bad head gasket...coolant smoke

Could be a number of things, but the valve guides are a weak point in
those engines.
Not sure what would make it smoke only at 2000 rpm though, unless
it's serious blowby from worn cylinders.
