Wasn't there a factory recall to remove them altogether?

Have the dealer remove the trap and install a brand new catalyst for free?

Sure, but when that's been done, that part of the exhaust will still get
clogged up. The OM617 didn't get the recall either... The local dealer
recommended something that I do not recall.

Trap Oxidizer was swapped out under factory campaign in my 617 Calif
300D early on, and whatever it was they put in then was replaced with
yet another unit (that i was told was a Catalytic Converter) a few years
back... of course it doesn't get very dirty anyway, since i'm almost
always using B

Right, Marshall used to always mention a clogged catalytic converter
as a possible (though unlikely) cause of power loss on 60x cars. Not
sure there
There is a recommended procedure for the dealer service department to
use to "clear" the trap, but it always fails (involves driving at high
rpm in second gear, I think). Really just confirms that the trap is
plugged well and truely, and that the recall can be performed, as most
dealers won't
There is not a way that I know of.

the dealer that did the last replacement of mine seemed willing enough
to replace it just because they looked it up on the computer and saw
there was an open campaign on it, not because there was any sign of any

The Italian tuneup seems to be the best. After a trip I took the
manifolds off with the CAT, and found it completely clean. If just
driven around town, it does start to bog down and run bad. Rev it up, on
a nice hill. The car will be happier. Rob '85 300D CA Costa Mesa, CA ==
