as many of you may have heard, our government has big issues with online
gambling. our congress have nearly unanimously voted to make it illegal for
financial institutions to let you take your money and transfer it to such a
website. the casual us players (the ones who bled the money) have largely
been chased off by this. even i have reduced my gambling over the past year
by over 90%, although i would contend it is largely for unrelated reasons.
just as in vietnam and now iraq, the government is winning all the battles.

but, as always, they are losing the war. prohibition pushed things
underground and there are always those who will figure out a way around it.
i was solicited for this method yesterday and i must say that i am impressed

it's a telephone service, but the rates are hugely high, so no one will use
it as such. if you wanted to use it as such, you'd let them draft an ach
from your account and then type in your number and the number you'd want to
call. then your phone would be called and you'd be connected through to the
other party. as both of you are receiving phone calls, there would be no
charge to either landline, so they'd become your phone company for billing
purposes.

what really happens though is that the number you enter to "call" is that of
your favorite gambling site. your phone rings. you hear a recorded
message. you are charged, say, $50 for this phone call. that $50 then
mysteriously gets deposited into your gambling account. for all anyone
knows, all you've done is make a very expensive phone call.

in the end, government tyranny cannot stamp out human creativity. they can
make war on the people all day and every day, but the people will somehow
figure out how to do what they want. stalin, hitler, dubya -- they all
pass.
