I suspect the engine was cold & would not start?

Exactly right, Tom.  Once the valves were adjusted, I could hear the 
compression strokes MUCH MORE DISTINCTLY while it was being turned over by 
the starter prior to firing up.  The PO said that it got harder and harder 
to start until one day, nothing worked.  Unfortunately, their attempts to 
get it started involved starter fluid which caused her to burn quite a bit 
of oil accompanied by LOTS of blowby.  I ended up selling it, but it was 
quite the learning experience.

Thanks once again for the knowledge you bring to the list!  That is what 
makes it so great for all of us Mercedes enthusiasts.
