It's a libtool restriction. That's why I was trying to find
a simple solution first. I'll add a --avoid-pic flag to libtool soon.

I've been away for a few. What is going on with the experimental
branch? Has the autoconf/automake stuff been moved to the stable
branch, and if so can I move the GGIMesa sources over as well?
