Aloha,

Our beta testing of our "mini-Metacard Site" is going well.
(details below for newbies on this list)

Feedback from Windows users is that our Academy logo has jaggy edges when
placed on light colored backgrounds (where I have set the background color
of the stack) But I am not seeing this on the Macs. . .I do see it also on
our PC machines. . .What could it be? I have resized the graphic from the
original GIF import. . .could this be the problem?

Also some Windows users have printing problems, others do not. . .some get
their pages centered, others get them shifted out of position. I am not sure
how I can trap for "local" problems like that. Mac users are pretty well
trained in the use of their page set ups. Do you normally try to completely
take over the Printer page set up on Windows stacks? or you figure the user
should know how to do that?

We are also getting some Windows users who get "nasty grams" when their
modems shut down, with the Portal stack still open in RAM, they reconnect
modems they reconnect to the net and then try to download something. instead
of calling the nice message from the downLoadNGo script that there is
connection problem, Windows says "this program has performed and illegal
operation and will be shut down." And a bunch of code in a box is thrown up
on the screen (Scott I can send you the screen shots if you want.) IN other
contexts, disconnect in the middle of a download etc. with the modem
completely off, the downLoadNGo script reacts properly. . .i.e. no
connection is open the script tell the user there is a problem. . .but if he
actually gets his TCP/IP connection back up, Windows is not happy with MC
trying to issue another Load url command.

For those following this thread:

New versions of the key stack and portal stack were posted recently.

(NOTE: Metacard users need not download the full standalone. Go to the
bottom of the page and just download the Key stack by itself and run from
with your own Metacard. I always post a copy of the simple stack whenever we
put up a new Standalone.)

Among the upgrades: a) some subtle changes to script that transparently
loads background images so as not to create an error message that a
connection is not open, when in fact it is. b) not unloading images from
the cache and passing an image URL reference in a global to a subsequently
downloaded stack which can then use that image (s) from cache previously
downloaded by the key stack. Too easy! A case where "you know there is an
easier way to do that," slogan really fits the bill. An 18-year-old Flash
wizard who plans to take his new .com company to millionaire status. . .well
his jaw dropped when he saw it working and the 5 lines of extra code needed
to implement that concept. . .we had a chuckle because three weeks ago he
was telling me "why don't you just do that all in Flash." now he knows why.
.

So far the Beta is going incredibly smooth. People in the UKraine are
already printing out Mystic Mouse for kids over there. We will go public
with this two days from now.
