Colors not working in 2.4?

Scenario: Mac OS open 2.4A2 with copy of home stack from 2.3.2 open stack previously built six buttons in a group have lost their background color, now defaulting to grey. Select all six buttons, go for tools menu... I get the wait, spinning ball cursor, flickers six times, menu finally drops
