Hi Stan and List,
Latest updated odds of impact for the 4/13/2029 encounter are
about 1 in 37 at JPL's site. (Odds haven't been updated at
NEODyS yet -- still 1 in 45 there). Mind you, these aren't
the true odds of impact, but rather a measure of our current
uncertainty in the orbit. With each
Anybody ever calculated what happens if this asteroid hits land/sea?

according to the link i posted earlier the explosive yeild of an impact
would be equivalent to about 1.4 gigatons
based only on size of the object - that should produce a crater ont he order
of about 9 miles wide if it hits on land.

Mm! Nearly the same odds as landing on 17 black! ;-)

Hi Stan and List,

This estimate is based on a guess for the object's reflectivity. If it's
especially dark, the mass and thus energy could be quite a bit greater.
Hopefully
Hi all
Im sure that eveyone know or/and own a piece of Shirokovsky pallmaterial
:))
Everyone also see all this beautifull slices from small , to big 10x10cm and
near 1mm thin.

Well Tom, at least you have your priorities right !!! Meteorites (as well as
stamps, coins, or any other collectible) are just THINGS...possessions, period.
They don't matter worth squat in the grand scheme of things. Ownership of a

Hi
I have some kind of reversed question about asteroid impact.
As You all see in TV, Indonesia and other countries was devastated by
Tsunami produced by big Earthquake. How You think, what size of
meteorite/asteroide can produce the same effects ?
10m? 50m ? Ofcourse, impact in the same place

Hi Paul and List Members,
From the little research I have done I think it is fair to say that
back in the 1800's meteorite craters were considered to be prospective
for precious metals.
The link between prospect and crater probably got lost back in the
days when Sudbury and Witwatersrand were

Hi List,
What was the mass of the signal most massive piece of Esquel? Some sources say
1500kg while others say 744kg. Which is more accurate?

With new prediscovery observations by the Spacewatch telescope
at Kitt Peak from March 15, 2004, published today, the JPL/Sentry
impact monitor has just updated the 2004 MN4 risk table. Now all
impact solutions for 2029 (in fact, all impact solutions before
the year 2037) have been removed,
