After about 18 hours of work, all pages are up and
running. Tomorrow I will make corrections, and post
links to all of the newspaper articles regarding the
meteorite fall. There are a lot of them, but all in
Spanish. I don't know why the english news never
picked up on this one. Notkin? You busy
Hey Tom,
Spectacular as usual! Indeed... these are certainly worth checking out as
are all your other images.
Cheers,

Armando, we did measure the hole/impact offsets, of 3
of the 4 house smashers (Cali #004 did not enter the
home, so there was only the initial impact point).
The other two were offset from ~9 cm for Cali #003
which hit the top of the refrigerator so did no travel
very far after penetrating the
Interesting report.
Something maybe feasible could be the determination of the vector between
the hole on the roof and the marks on the floor.
This for each stone, and compare them with a 3d plot.
Would they be paralel or radial? Would they focus?

Hi all -
Hmmm... if the surface were heated, but the interior
remained very cold, then depending on compostiion
(conductivity), ablation (heat lost), size, and too
many other factors for my small brain to think of
right now, then perhaps that may be why some
meteorites are cold to the touch
Hi list.I was told that a certain martian meteorite
that was all the rage in tucson this year has possibly
a couple of pairings.2 of them are NWA 2975 AND NWA
2786.Does anyone know this nwa number.I was told there
was about a kilo of it and lots of small individuals.

As I've noted often in the past, it requires very unusual conditions for
a meteorite to retain any of its horizontal velocity component when it
reaches the ground. The conditions of the Cali fall wouldn't seem to
support this. These lightweight stones may have had a slight north to
south angle
I don't think so, as it should have then been seen to
explode over Cali, and from what I gather, the largest
explosions were at least 30 km north of the city, but
I dont know. Isn't is odd though, that three of the
four home smashers weighed less than 100 grams, and
two of the four weighed less
Too bad. neat photos though!

Agreed, it doesn't seem that such light stones should be able to
penetrate the roofs. It would be interesting to experiment with an air
cannon and figure out just what velocity is required for that kind of
energy. The material evidence of the fall does suggest that the
components still carried

Ssteve,
Not possible NWA 2786 is a mesosiderite.
You're confused.
NWA 2986 is supposedly paired NWA 2975. See Jim Stropes fine web site to
learn more.

Hi Alex, Elton, Sterling and all,
Nininger did a number of investigations where people picked up
meteorites soon after the fall. His conclusions were they were cold to
the touch (a number of them frosted over) after falling. Seems however
there is always an exception to the rule and this seem
Listees, Greetings All:
Amazing thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and flooding here in Tucson. Not
a bit like the Tucson you know and love during the Gem Show. It always
seems odd to me that we get our annual rainfall in July. Just doesn't
feel right for the desert to be wet in the summer.
Yes, my thoughts are in the same general direction. I don't have any
good sense of the mechanism by which energy is coupled into a falling
meteorite in such a way as to actually produce an explosion capable of
blowing off pieces at high speed (rather than just disrupting the
object). So I'm
Zag, the salt box.
Mike's mention of slickensides and the photos of the
light gray matrix, uniformly small chondrules --
describes Zag, IMHO, and may have literally shared
adjacent lots on the same parent body.
I'm curious what analysis will ultimately show.

With the assumed-evidence of frost forming on some
freshly observed falls, and the seemingly logical
assumption behind the physics of heat-transfer-rates
vs the relatively short time a falling meteor travels
at hyper velocity, I tend to believe that meteorites
are probably cold
Steve,
What you are referring to is NWA 2986. (see link)
http://www.catchafallingstar.com/nwa2986/nwa2986.htm
NWA 2986 and NWA 4766 are paired with NWA 2975. NWA 2975 was only ONE stone
most of which went to one collector with the exception of the classification
repository and a
This one looks quite different than Zag though, the
chondrules are not even close in my opinion. They are
much more prevelant in Cali.

One thing about this fall, it came over the Andes
Mountains just to the north of the city, and then
impacted only ~8 km from the mountains. This was ~4:30
on a very sunny Friday afternoon, so in a city of ~2.5

the noise level too high to see

people on this list for my brash email I sent this morning. There was no harm

From now any sales, ebay, givaways, or non-meteorite items will strictly be done
on another list that was meant to be for that reason,I will post to that. And
here is promise I will keep and you can truly count on,if I do post something
like I just stated, I will unsubscribe from this list
