Hi all,
I have a couple of Monnig related questions that i need to ask:
Firstly, i have asked this before with no joy but has anyone got a
spare copy of the 1996 Monnig catalogue? This was possibly produced by
David New in 1996 and i know TCU have a copy as well as several list
members. This was
Just found the following post from Matteo Chinellato dated 1st
September 2002, he mentions having a Monnig Ensisheim specimen for
sale with old label. This could possibly be the 218.1 numbered
specimen that i am chasing info on. Anyone have any knowledge of this?
Matteo, if you still read the list
Hi List and Happy Thanksgiving coming up to all of you. Anyways, I purchased
a 6+ gm. slice of the Admire Pallasite in May of 2011 from an eBay seller
with 100% feedback and of course I am not a fan of meteorites with a
reputation as a Ruster! The auction by this Seller bragged about how well
Hi Martin,
Maybe I can provide you a partial help .
In late 2003, I started a compilation of the weights (masses) of all
the Ensisheim meteorite fragments, slices...owned in museums,
institutes, or held in private collections...
I received much feedback and help from various people
Looks very familiar. I had a complete slice of Brenham which I paid over
$2,500.00 for do the same thing. Some well-known dealer, which will remain
nameless for now which was more concerned with easy money coated it with
lacquer instead of providing a proper polish. The lacquer was the only
Hi Zelimir,
Thankyou for that information and i hope Matteo is reading this as
more information from him regards the specimens that he sold would be
most useful.
In the 1996 Monnig catalogue there are two specimens of Ensisheim
listed (I have a copy of that particular page but i am still after a
Hi Don and Adam,
I am not nearly as experienced as either of you. Having said that, I
have seen and owned stable specimens of Brenham and Admire. I will
not argue against the ruster reputation, because there are numerous
examples of these pallasites self-destructing.
The problem is, mainly,
Good points Mike and Adam,
But, I would like to add that the individual from which the slice was cut and
prepared is a large factor in their stability. I have seen (and owned) stable
and self-destructing Brenham, Seymchan, Fukang, etc. What type of soil the
individual was recovered from, and

I have a few meteoritic items on Ebay. See them at

A general but related question...how long is a dealer to be held responsible
for the specimen? I've had customers come back after 10 years and want a refund
for a rusty Imilac. Typically, I work something out but I don't think a
lifetime guarantee is warranted.
Opinions?

I go to great lengths to purify water myself before it comes near a specimen.
Here is one of my cutting workstations.

I appreciate the kind words.
I find it funny that you mention a 16 saw needing a lot of coolant. I almost
went broke filling up my 24 Highlands Park with 100 gallons of mineral oil.
When the price of mineral oil went from $2.79 a gallon to over $6.00 gallon, I
finally switched to purified
Thanks List for all the great responces and opinions. Still have not heard
from the Seller. I did ask if he cut this specimen using Tap Water instead
of Distilled Water. Thanks for bringing up using Distilled water MikeG and
Adam. That is all I use whenever I cut my specimens and I have never
Hi Don and List,
In an ideal situation, I dry specimens in the oven for at least 10-12
hours, sometimes longer. It depends on the specimen type and when I
do the cutting. If I do the cutting at noon, and the oven is not
needed for cooking that day, I'll leave the specimens in there until
Hi List. I added a little more information both in text and graphic on the

I have two specimens of Admire from Keith and Dana
(http://www.kdmeteorites.com) - one slice and one nugget - that I picked up
in Tucson last year. They have been sitting on my desk here and have held
up extremely well. Not a speck of rust in almost a year... and I am in
Georgia :) We were
Hello Adam, listees,
there's still good Brenham material out there that doesn't fall apart as
soon as it arrives. A couple of years ago I bought a 400g slice of Brenham
from Rob Wesel. It's extremely well polished and prepared and it still looks
'as new'.
But there's more. When my slice
Hi Sean and List,
Yes, us southern boys have our challenges with moisture and humidity.
I use rechargeable color changing dessicant cartridges in my
specimen cabinet. Presently, I keep very few specimens on open
display. 99% of my collection is crammed into one cabinet, with some
