Hello Roman,
This object will be the subject of debate between those on the List who answer
your request. Why not advise your friend to cut out all the contention and, as
he lives in Arizona, simply take it to the appropriate department of one of the

Hello Roman,
It is really quite simple.
Since he is in Phoenix AZ, he should go straight to Arizona State
University (ASU) they have an archaeology department and some of the
top meteorite experts.
Perfect place to get answers to all his questions.

Derek's recommendation brings up an interesting point. What is the function of
the alcohol? Post etched irons are usually rinsed in distilled water anyways to
remove the Nital, so why use alcohol at all?

I have purchased Nital from chemical-supermarket.com. Premixed and much easier

Shipping is a little costly due to safety, but still worth it for me. I

I would use steam distilled water insted of alcohol. Less dangerous. Have had
personal bad experance with nitol. If you use nitol, then keep in a ice bath
to keep it stable.
Thanks, Derek.

Hello Listers,
So I stopped by the Rock show yesterday at the Ramada inn for a bit and walked
around with a friend. I saw a lot of minerals and some meteorites
and the ones I saw, it seemed Chelyabinsk was popular. The lowest price I saw

While we're on the topic, which solution of nitric acid works best for
making nitol? The purest I can find seems to be 67.2%. What would be the
ratio of alcohol added to make nitol?

Phil,
70% Nitric Acid is fairly common. Nital mixtures vary. So 'best' is
subjective.
Very dangerous stuff! Use safety gear.
