Hello Mike G & Listers
I would think if your able to make an etch, that part would be iron, but again,

shale. I guess it would be both and whoever is buying or selling would have to
disclose that and the buyer would have to pay accordingly to what is the market

Very good question MikeG! I look forward to a expert in Geology or Petrology
and or a meteoricist that can explain this in terms that will resolve this
oxidized/non-oxidized state or better yet "to be or not to be, that is the
question" !!

Hi Folks,
I have seen shale or oxide fragments that had unoxidized metal inside
them when cut. From the outside, the pieces resembled shale, but the
interior was unoxidized iron or it had a "core" area with shiny metal
in it.
So, given such a specimen, is it still considered "shale" or "oxide"

Very interesting Don, and thank you for posting this response from
Zsolt.
I will have to disagree with him on one thing, he wrote: "When I have
bought this piece from Anne Black she didnt mentioned me that it is
shale." That is not correct, it is clearly listed as "Shale" on my
website, on

If those pieces were cut out of the 64g piece of Hoba I sold to Zsolt
very recently, then yes, it is shale.
And Michael, it seems that very few people on either side of the
Atlantic are even aware that there is a difference in numeral notation.

The small piece does not match the "cut lines" from the piece it is
supposed to have come from. The piece it is supposed to be from looks
like all metal, this small piece does not.
It's being sold on the USA eBay site so the seller should use USA
decimal notation to avoid confusion.

Michael, in Europe they use commas like we use periods in numbers.
This is shale. The iron is extremely rare. If anyone is interested, I am taking
orders for solid slices (not shale put meteoritic iron) of Hoba with impeccable
provenance.

There's no way that piece is over 3kg, either, per the item's title.
Nor does the small piece in any way match what is shown with 'cutting
lines' on the main photo.
