just curious if that's a request with any muscle behind it.

I just talked to Mike Farmer. He is in the fall area now and will post something in a
few hours on what he finds. Maybe then we will have a better idea of what type of
meteorite it is.

Hello Steven:
I think of myself as a "fence-sitter", being scientific-minded and a collector
and dealer of meteorites. However, I believe that meteorites (and any natural
history-type items) should be shared by all to enjoy. There are usually enough
meteorites to go around and we all learn from t

Hello List,
I apologize for this post being so late, but I wasn't
aware that Steve Arnold's post was still being
questioned. I will only add to
A recent issue of METEORITICS contains a very interesting paper on the
"ownership" of meteorites. I don't have the specific citation at hand,
but it should be easy to find and I urge everyone to read it.
I think (at least in the U.S.) the owner of the property on which a
meteorite falls owns
"People are being urged to "turn over" finds to the scientific
community."
I want to know, do we have to? Why would the scientific community need all
the stones? Is it like the old woman meteorite where they cut of 600 or so
pounds to study?
Thanks, Tom

More to follow...

Hello List,
After doing some additional research and making a few phone calls, it
appears that BIG STEVE is not only correct, but is credited for breaking
the news to our List.
I know that several of our dauntless meteorite hunters are either on
location or in route.

We may have an actual "hammer" in Chicago!
If you check out the video clip in the "FeedRoom" link you get a much
better view of the object in question.

At least one was said to have fragmented on impact with a city street.
Could the pictured pieces be from that impact (showing primarily
uncrusted interior surfaces)? It also could look like some darker crust
on the bottom of the piece in the officer's left hand.

Hi All,
Where's the fusion crust on the meteorite pictured at the
following link?
http://www.nbc5.com/news/2067595/detail.html
Could the image be THAT overexposed that it looks grey
and orange on the outside? Given the past track record
of such stories, I wouldn't quite be at the point of booki
