If you have a sniff through the MD configure script, you can run it
with --enable-clamd or --enable-clamav which should then force a detection.
Also, don't quote me too strongly on this one, but I don't think you *need*
to run both clamd and clam-milter.

I recompiled Mimedefang (2.39) after compiling clamav and it recognized
that clamav was there. I went into the clamav-milter directory and
compiled clamav-milter. Do I need this? Is it possible to just run the
clamav binary- not as a milter and have Mimedefang call it to scan the
mailboxes

I was able to build mimedefang but can not get it to start.
I am using solaris 9 x86 , installed all of the perl modules and etc. .
when I try to start the ./examples/init-script I get "Killed"
I used sh -x ./init-script start and got the following.
