X and VMware Workstation

I can't seem to get X to work beyond 800x600 on VMware Workstation 7.0 regardless of what Modes I specify in xorg.conf. All the prior information I find on Google doesn't seem to work anymore despite the problem not being new. Anyone know how it is done these days? Or about getting VMware Tools
