2) to solve I copied the content of my stick to a larger usbdisk (almost 512gb
by copy machine), upgraded the disk and
copied back to the stick.

That's hard to believe. If the installer booted from it,
it must have been recognized as one of the sd? disks
during the bsd.rd boot.
