OK, as usual, I don't have a solution to your (current) problem, but I was experiencing the original Gnome/GDM problem you had, and it was easily fixed. For some reason, after installing gnome-session and gdm from packages, /etc/X11/gdm/Xsession was not executable, but gdm appears to expect it to b
