Flatbed scanner stopped wording - permissions problem?

Hello misc@: My Epson Perfection 1650 has worked on -current for many months but in the last 3 days attempts to scan with xsane say: "Failed to start scanner: operation not supported". Scanimage -L shows the scanner is detected corectly. I have already made the permissions changes for usb as
